To improve the disaster-causing precipitation forecasts, accurate observation as well as high-resolution numerical models are needed. Since heavy precipitation requires enhanced moisture supply, understanding moisture transport would clarify the physical linkage across muti-scales, ranging from large-scale dynamics to local heavy rainfall or snowfall. This would further contribute to improve the forecasts of disaster-causing meteorological events.
Recent satellite products, high-resolution reanalyses, and the use of water isotopes enabled us to diagnose moisture source, moisture transport and its budget more precisely. Various modeling approaches and dynamical/thermo-dynamical analyses are useful to clarify the linkages. Also, sharing state-of-the-art knowledge of observational methods and datasets on precipitation and water vapor would be a basis of such studies.
In this special edition, we welcome studies on heavy precipitation and moisture transport from all aspects, without limiting regions, periods, or time scales. Our scope includes all precipitation related phenomena, including, but not limited to, mesoscale convective systems, various cyclones including tropical cyclones and polar-lows, Asian monsoons. Studies on and across various processes -- large-scale moisture transport, rapid evaporation from the warm sea surface, and orographic enhancement (for example, that occurs with typhoons, Himalayan precipitation, and Japanese winter precipitation) – are solicited. As for methodology, case studies, statistical analyses, numerical modeling, theoretical studies, observational methods, and developments of datasets are all welcome. We also welcome review papers.
